Event description

Description

We are very fortunate to be invited by Christopher Sladden to see his Southrepps Estate. The shoot in its current form started around Southrepps Hall in 1980 and has expanded since to cover most of the land, much of it bare, around Southrepps village and totals about 1,000 hectares.

Martin Tickler of the then Game Conservancy advised in the early days and over the last 37 years the estate has planted around 50 kilometres of hedges and 40,000 trees in 8 new plantations – improving the landscape and biodiversity significantly.

Andrew Lincoln, the gamekeeper, has been with the shoot for the last 17 years and has revolutionised it so that the early bags of approximately 30 birds/day now average 250 birds.

There are now 14 days shooting in total and there are enough drives with the help of wild bird cover and maize for the November days to be back to back, with some of the best presented partridges in the county helped by the valley land.

Andrew received a special award from the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust at Southrepps in the Purdey Awards in 2016. This shoot shows what can be achieved by an enthusiastic owner, coupled with professional advice from the GWCT and a first-class keeper.

The walk will be led by Andrew, Martin Tickler and the current GWCT Head of Advisory, Roger Draycott. The evening with end with the usual hog roast and a pay bar.
