Norfolk Walking and Cycling Festival 2019

About this Event

This walk will introduce participants to Seahenge and its sister, two mysterious Bronze Age timber circles once found on Holme Beach. Led by archaeologists who have been studying the circles for over twenty years, it will visit the beach and a replica of Seahenge built by Channel 4’s Time Team.

Family and child friendly: No

Distance of walk: Approx 4 miles

Suitability: Moderate level – a moderate level of fitness is required i.e. mid-distance walks (4-8 miles) or rides (5-12 miles) over sometimes uneven terrain with no major gradients.

Getting there: The walk starting point is close to Lynx Coastliner 36 (King’s Lynn to Wells-next-the-Sea/Fakenham) bus stops in Thornham. Timetables are available at http://www.lynxbus.co.uk/bus-times-fares/.

Start point: 10am (meet from 0945) @ Car park at Drove Orchards - Drove Orchards, Drove House, Thornham Road, Thornham, Hunstanton PE36 6LS

Finish point: 2pm @ Car park at Drove Orchards - Drove Orchards, Drove House, Thornham Road, Thornham, Hunstanton PE36 6LS

Accessibility: Some of the walk will be on footpaths that can be muddy, have long grass and puddles/potholes, and be uneven. It will also include walking on soft/wet sand on Holme beach and in sand dunes. It will be necessary to cross the A149 in two locations which will involve walking over low verge banks (twice in each place).

Participants should prepare for poor weather, including wind and rain, and be aware that weather conditions can change rapidly on the coast. They must bring appropriate sunscreen, clothing and footwear, including waterproofs, stout shoes/boots etc.

**Please note that Seahenge is now on display in Lynn Museum (https://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/lynn-museum) and the second circle is no longer visible on Holme Beach.**
