Abstract

The book analyses the EU relations with the rest of the planet. The focus is on five areas of
EU relations: economic (trade and development), social (human rights and equality),
ecological (sustainable development and combatting climate change), conflict (sustainable
peace and rule of law), and political (democracy and good governance). The research
takes a unique approach to studying the EU in planetary politics. Planetary politics are
characterised by truly planetary relations of causality that can only be understood and
addressed holistically, and which demands an ecocentric and deeply interdependent
approach to analysis.

This seminar is part of our Earth System Governance Series hosted by the ESG Centre Bath.

Ian Manners is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Lund University. His research interests lie at the intersections of the critical social theory and the study of the European Union in planetary politics. He is author or editor of 12 books, reports, and special issues. His research currently focuses on the European Union's Normative Power in Planetary Politics, including economy (EU trade and development policies), society (EU equality and human rights policies), ecology (EU sustainable development and climate change policies), conflict (EU sustainable peace and rule of law policies), and polity (EU good governance and democracy policies).
