Our popular range of courses over the summer are back for 2019. They are designed to get you started with paddling or to develop your skills further.

Courses are for club members only. To take part on a course you will need to be a member of North Avon Canoe Club (NACC) - see below for further information about how to join if you are not a member.

Kit Hire - If you have selected kit hire including a kayak then a boat will be reserved for you for the duration of the course. If you require a helmet and a spraydeck , you will be allocated a set on the first night, you will then look after them for the duration of the course and return on the last night. Paddles will be available to collect each night from the trailer.

If you not chose to hire kit you are required to provide all your own kit - boat, paddle, spraydeck, helmet and bouyancy aid.

Just want to have a go?

Paddle Start is £5 per night and is a weekly pay-as-you-go taster session for those that want to try out the sport. No commitment, just fun! No booking required. Just turn up on a Wednesday night (15 May to 26 June).

NACC Membership

Courses are for club members only. If you are not an existing member of North Avon Canoe Club we ask that you join the club when you book your place on the course. You can do this in two ways

  • online alongside your booking of the course (incurs an additional payment handling charge) or

  • by downloading the form and paying by BACS or cheque from the North Avon Canoe Club website.

Please note: if you are choosing a family membership option and you are not all British Canoeing (BC) members then you will need to pay for additional BC cover for each adult and child not covered by BC membership in addition to the family membership fee.

Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to paddling with you this summer.

FAQs

Is there parking?

Yes there is a public car park at The Shallows which is free.

What do I need to bring?

You need to bring water, a snack and a spare set of dry clothes. We recommend wearing shorts or leggings - not jeans! A warm layer like a fleece is a good idea for cooler evenings. You will need to wear something on your feet - wet suit boots/beach shoes or trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal. Bring a towel and 20p for the toilet.

If I have my own kit do I need to hire?

If you have your own paddling kit then you are very welcome to use it on the courses. Please check with us if you not sure whether it will be suitable. If you do not hire a boat and don't have your own, we cannot guarantee that one will be available to you on each evening of the course.

What if it rains?

Canoeing is a water sport- so we will run the courses whatever the weather. The only time we will cancel a session is if the river has too much water in it to make it safe for beginners to paddle on or very extreme weather (lighting storms).

My child is doing the course - do I need to stay with them?

We ask that if you have a child on a course that you or another adult remain at Saltford during the training.

Who will lead the course?

The courses are led by a mixture of experienced paddlers and coaches. If you choose to be assessed for the Discover or Explorer Award then this will be carried out by one of our qualified coaches.

What can I do after the courses?

As a member of the club you can take part in the trips advertised on the website www.northavoncanoeclub.org or our facebook page to develop your skills further and get to know more people in the club - these are usually at weekend. For many the next step will be to join the club on its Summer Training Weekend at Biblins in the Forest of Dean ( 5-7 July).

You can also join us:

  • on Wednesday nights after the course have finished up until Wednesday 28th August.

  • on the 1st Saturday of the month at 10.00am for a gentle paddle at the Shallows or sometimes a different location - check the Facebook page for details.

  • on the last Saturday of the month at Yate Leisure Centre (6.30pm - 8.15pm) see website or Facebook for more details - bring the rest of the family to have a go!

  • Look out for the fun evenings during the summer - Games Night (29 May) and Try any Boat Night (3 July) at Saltford.

  • As a member join us on a wide range of trips throughout the year - see the Facebook page for more details.

  • Hire club boats for your own adventures.

What is BC - British Canoeing?

British Canoeing is the national organisation for the sport of canoeing in England. You will notice that the courses have different prices for BC members. This is because existing members of the British Canoeing (BC) have a level of insurance cover whilst they are paddling. If you are not a member then the club will need to purchase that cover for you.
