About this event

Our popular range of courses over the summer are back for 2022.  They are designed to get you started with paddling or to develop your skills further.

Courses are for club members only. To take part on a course you will need to be a member of North Avon Canoe Club (NACC) - see below for further information about how to join if you are not a member.

There are 3 courses to choose from:

Beginners Kayak - Adults - six week course ( 10 May - 21 June) £50.00 or £80.00 with kit hire. A great place to start from scratch and work towards a British Canoeing Discover award if you want to.  Dates include a break for half term on 31 May when you are welcome to join us for a social paddle.

Paddlesport for Juniors - six week course ( 10 May - 21 June) £50.00 or £80.00 with kit hire.  A great place to start with the basics and work towards a Paddle Discover award. A fun course tailored towards the younger paddler ( 8- 14 years).   Dates include a break for half term on 31 May when you are welcome to join us for a social paddle.

Open Canoe - six week course (10 May - 21 June) £50.00 or £80.00 with kit hire. Start from the basics and become a confident open canoeist, optional assessment for the British Canoeing Paddle Discover Award is included. Dates include a break for half term on 31 May when you are welcome to join us for a social paddle.

Just want to have a go?

Come and Try it!  is £5 per night for members or £10 for non members. A weekly pay-as-you-go taster session for anyone wanting to try out the sport. No commitment, just fun!  Please book a ticket so we can make sure we have a boat for you. (10 May - 12 July 2022).

Kit Hire - To take part in the course you will need the right kit.  You can order the kit you need at the end of the order form. If you have ordered kit hire, then a kayak/canoe will be reserved for you for the duration of the course.  If you require a helmet and a spraydeck, you will be allocated a set on the first night, you will then look after them for the duration of the course and return on the last night. Paddles will be available to collect each night from the trailer.

You will be required to pay an additional £10 returnable deposit (cash/cheque) on the first night for the kit hire.

If you choose not to hire kit then you are required to provide all your own kit - boat, paddle, spraydeck, helmet and buoyancy aid.

NACC Membership

Courses are for club members only. If you are not an existing member of North Avon Canoe Club we ask that you join the club when you book your place on the course.  You can do this in two ways:

  • online alongside your booking of the course (incurs an additional payment handling charge) or
  • by downloading the form and paying by BACS or cheque from the North Avon Canoe Club website.

Please note: You will need to purchase membership for each member of your family/household who wishes to do a course. If you are not a British Canoeing (BC) member then you will need to chose the non-BC option. If you have any queries please do contact us on training@northavoncanoeclub.org.uk

Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.  We look forward to paddling with you this summer.

Is there parking?

Yes there is parking at the sailing club. If you can car share with a friend even better. On arrival you will be shown where to park.

What do I need to bring?

You need to bring water, a snack and a spare set of dry clothes.  We recommend wearing shorts or leggings - not jeans!  A warm layer like a fleece is a good idea for cooler evenings. You will need to wear something on your feet - wet suit boots/beach shoes or trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal.  If its raining then a light rain coat is a good idea. Bring a towel. There are changing rooms and toilets on site.  A warm drink is a good idea if its a cooler evening. If you are feeling sociable after paddling then a few ££s for a drink in the pub afterwards might come in handy too.

If I have my own kit do I need to hire?

If you have your own paddling kit then you are very welcome to use it on the courses.  Please check with us if you are not sure whether it will be suitable.  If you do not hire a boat and don't have your own,  we cannot guarantee that one will be available to you on each evening of the course.

What if it rains?

Canoeing is a water sport- so we will run the courses whatever the weather.  The only time we will cancel a session is if the river has too much water in it to make it safe for beginners or in very extreme weather (lightning storms).

My child is doing the course - do I need to stay with them?

We ask that if you have a child on a course that you or another adult remain at Saltford during the training.

Who will lead the course?

The courses are led by a mixture of experienced paddlers and coaches. If you choose to be assessed for the Discover Award then this will be carried out by one of our qualified coaches.

What can I do after the courses?

As a member of the club you can take part in the trips advertised on the website www.northavoncanoeclub.org.uk or our facebook page to develop your skills further and get to know more people in the club - these are usually at weekend.  For many the next step will be to join the club on its Summer Training Weekend at Biblins in the Forest of Dean (8-10 July).

You can also join us:

    • on Wednesday nights after the courses have finished up until Wednesday 30th August.
    • on the 1st Saturday of the month at 10.00am for a gentle social paddle or sometimes a different location - check the Facebook page for details.
    • as a member on a wide range of trips throughout the year - see the Facebook page for more details.

You can also hire club boats for your own adventures.

Join us for fun evenings during the summer eg- Try a Boat Night (19 July) at Saltford.
