Event description

Description

Following the launch of North East Ambition in July 2017, we held our first Regional Careers Leader Network Meeting in October 2017 which was hugely successful, well received and attended by over 90 schools and colleges. Since that meeting, the DfE have issued a new national careers strategy and new statutory guidance for schools and colleges.

We would be delighted to invite Careers Leaders and those Senior Leaders responsible for Careers Education in secondary schools and colleges across the North East LEP region to the next network meeting where we will explore the implications of this strategy.

This event is free and will be a fantastic opportunity for careers / senior leaders to:

  • Understand the new national careers strategy (Dec 2017) and the subsequent updated statutory guidance (Jan 2018)
  • Participate in an extended workshop with national expert David Andrews, who will explore the new strategy, the implications for schools and colleges and the role of careers leader going forward.
  • Hear about emerging models of careers leadership and reflect on what this means in practice.
  • Be part of ‘North East Ambition’ and explore the practical support and resources available to help schools and colleges deliver high quality CEIAG for each and every student –including those who are the most vulnerable and those with special educational needs.
  • Hear from The Bank of England about their new learning resources and support for schools and colleges.
  • Learn about good practice developed by careers leaders who have already began to implement the career benchmarks in their schools and colleges and how they have measured and ensured impact.
  • Network with other careers leader across the region, build partnerships and collaborate.
  • Consider how best to make use of an Enterprise Adviser and the Enterprise Adviser Network.

This is your network and following delegate requests from our previous Regional Careers Leaders' Network meeting we are delighted to announce that independent education consultant, trainer, researcher and writer, David Andrews OBE, we will be our keynote speaker and lead facilitator at the meeting.

David specialises in career education and guidance. He leads courses for careers leaders and careers advisers, provides consultancy to local authorities, schools and careers companies and has spoken at numerous conferences. David is a Fellow of the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICEC) and a Visiting Fellow in Career Education and Guidance at the International Centre for Guidance Studies, University of Derby. Most of his work is in the UK but he has worked on projects in East Africa, Kosovo, Pakistan and the Gulf states.

David is an honorary life member of the Career Development Institute (CDI) and works as a policy adviser to the Institute. In 2011 he authored Careers Education in Schools, a book on the history of the development of careers education in schools and which goes on to critically examine current policy, practice and possibilities for the future. Before moving into freelance work in 1998, he taught in secondary schools and then worked as an advisory teacher in a careers service and an LEA adviser. David has worked as an adviser to the DfEE, the DfES and the DCSF, but not yet to the DfE. He is currently working on the leadership and management of careers work in schools.

Significant momentum has been generated and the North East is leading careers guidance reforms – come along, get connected and help to shape best and next practice.

“It is our North East Ambition that every young person can make fully informed decisions about their futures and identify routes into a successful working life. We want each and every young person to be inspired to understand that life and work experiences, alongside career and formal qualifications, are incredibly valuable.”
