North East Culture Social is back!

This time at Newcastle Central Library on September 17th

Presented in partnership by NewcastleGateshead Cultural Venues (NGCV), Newcastle City Council, and Unfolding Theatre

This special edition of North East Culture Social will bring together artists, cultural sector leaders, grassroots community organisations, venue staff, makers and doers to focus on Newcastle. The event will discuss what the cultural life of the city means to us, and how the development of a Culture Partnership for Newcastle can spark collaboration, ambition and sustainability.

Hosted by Annie Rigby (CEO/Artistic Director, Unfolding Theatre), the event will feature:

  • Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council – keynote speech on why culture matters to Newcastle and hopes for the future
  • Keith Merrin (Director, North East Museums) sharing reflections and ambitions for a citywide cultural partnership
  • David Almond OBE - author of Skellig, The Falling Boy, Puppet, The Tightrope Walkers, A Song for Ella Grey and many more novels, stories, picture books, radio programmes and plays. David will be speaking on children, culture, creativity and place.
  • Kay Greyson - rapper and performer. Kay will perform one of her tracks, and share thoughts about artist development, ambition and the city.

We’ll take a look at where we are now — including the priorities of the city’s cultural strategy and how working in partnership can take it forward. It’s a chance to have your say, connect with others, and play a part in shaping an ambitious cultural future for Newcastle.

There’ll be space to talk, reflect and make new connections – over a cuppa, of course.

Free tea and coffee provided.

Ten £75 bursaries are available for freelance artists and community practitioners. To apply, email info@unfoldingtheatre.co.uk with a few lines on why you’d like to attend and how it supports your work. If applications exceed availability, we’ll prioritise freelancers based in Newcastle and those from backgrounds currently under-represented in the cultural sector.

Come along, connect, and be part of shaping what comes next.
