Sonia Sanchez, a seminal figure in the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, Black Studies and Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, is a poet who has harnessed her gift for words as a champion against racism, sexism, and war, fusing art and activism over the past six decades. As a pioneer of spoken word poetry, her influence on hip hop is fundamental. But her tireless commitment to justice for all people has come at a personal cost. The recipient of both the Robert Frost Medal for distinguished lifetime service to American poetry and the Langston Hughes Poetry award, Sanchez has been described by her close friend Maya Angelou as 'a lion in literature’s forest'.
The Women in Activism Film Festival, co-presented by Black History Studies and the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, is a programme of screenings to highlight the variety of work, experiences and excellence of black women around the world and through history. The screenings will focus on four women over four weeks featuring a mixture of feature films and documentaries. We will incorporate presentations and facilitate engaging post film discussions with audience members.
