Event Details

Making the Deanery Work: exploring the role of the Area/Rural Dean in negotiating a changing church and world

A two day conference for new Area/Rural Deans in which we will explore together this significant leadership role.

We will do this by engaging in an interactive and conversational process which will focus on:

  • The missional purpose of the deanery and its structures
  • Strategic ministry in the context of today’s church
  • Managing the deanery’s key relationships

At the heart of our exploration we will be reflecting on the way we need to draw on the wellsprings of church’s spirituality to fulfil the role effectively. There will be opportunity to delve into some of the more technical aspects of the deanery as the Church of England understands it, as well as develop practical responses to some of the challenges that go with the job. We will ask, ‘where is God at work in the way that deaneries are developing and how might we participate more effectively in God’s mission by fulfilling the role of Area Dean effectively?’

As consultant to the conference Peter Robinson, the Archdeacon of Lindisfarne in the Diocese of Newcastle will lead the conversation, offer key input and stimulate theological reflection.  In his current role Peter works across the County of Northumberland, and has a longstanding involvement in practical theological education. Formerly, Peter was a parish priest and Director of the Urban Ministry and Theology Project in the east end of Newcastle.

The cost for the conference will be £100 which includes accomodation, all meals and any materials. Once you have registered select "Free Ticket" for the conference we will invoice your Diocese for the fee. Please indicate below the name and address to which we need to send the invoice.

Please book by the end of June as Archdeacon Peter will be sending out a pre-conference questionnaire and information to ensure that the final programme for the two days is of maximum benefit to all participants.
