Overview of the event

Regional universities are key partners to Sci-Tech Daresbury in bringing support and expertise to technology companies in areas such as:

• Student projects & placements

• Student recruitment

• Collaborative research & Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

• Access to facilities

Therefore this event is designed to help technology companies better understand the breadth of support available to them and how they can best take advantage of this. It will be done through two mechanisms:

• Short session highlighting 4 company case studies through a combination of interview, expert panel and Q&A from the audience.

• Exhibition enabling you to meet with representatives from 10 regional universities and Innovate UK to explore potential areas of support and collaboration.

11.30 – Tours of Campus facilities (30-40 minutes)

Tour 1 – ITAC Laboratory - Campus Technology Hub - Techspace One

This will provide an overview of a range of laboratory and workshop facilities at Sci-Tech Daresbury, along with a range of analytical and rapid prototyping equipment that can be accessed.

Tour 2 – Virtual Engineering Centre – Hartree Centre

This will provide an overview of the high performance computing, data analytics, AI and VR/AR facilities that are located at Sci-Tech Daresbury.


Biographies of company case studies

Nikki Barraclough (Executive Director, Prevent Breast Cancer)

Prevent Breast Cancer (PBC) is the UK’s only charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer. A national charity, based in Manchester, PBC funds ground breaking research into early diagnosis, screening and lifestyle changes.

Nikki has been Executive Director since 2014. She leads the fundraising, marketing and finance teams and is responsible for increasing awareness and raising funds to support vital medical research.

PBC’s relationship with the graphic design students at The University of Bolton started 4 years ago. Each year, Nikki has presented a new brief asking the students to create innovative digital and print campaigns that will help the charity move one step closer to its goal of a breast cancer free future.

Laurie Watson (Student Recruitment Officer (NW), PwC)

Laurie Watson joined PwC in August 2017 and is the Student Recruitment Officer for the Northwest region. Her role includes attracting, recruiting and supporting talented individuals through PwCs Internships and Graduate Programmes. During busy season, Laurie's working week is spent at University campuses, supporting students with coaching and guidance, as well as promoting the numerous opportunities PwC provides. Phil Goddard (CEO, CSols)

Phil is CEO of three Laboratory Software companies, CSols Ltd, Dendrite Labs Ltd (in Runcorn) and XLabs Ltd (in the Isle of Man). His long-term interest is building a Laboratory Software cluster of global significance in the North West. He has been involved in Lab Software from its infancy – first as a Lab\Lab Data System Manager at ICI and then at the first major Lab Software company, Nelson Analytical, where he was UK Manager. He was educated at the University of Cambridge from where he has a PhD in Physical Chemistry and a Masters level qualification in Computer Science.

Paul Oldfield (Environment Manager, Mersey Gateway Crossings Board)

Paul Oldfield is the environment manager, Mersey Gateway Crossings Board. The completion of this £600m bridge and road crossing involved extensive environmental monitoring and management, and this important work will be continued for the next 25 years through the innovative Mersey Gateway Environment Trust. Paul has a background of over 20 years in ecological restoration and creative conservation in Runcorn, Widnes and Cheshire with projects as diverse as the Mersey Forest, Wild About Halton and Beyond Our Bridges.
