Our keynote speakers - Diane Modahl and Sharon Bailey
Our 1st keynote speaker this year is a woman who needs no introduction. Diane Modahl is one of Britain’s most successful 800m runners. She won a Gold Medal in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and followed this up with a further Silver and Bronze Medal. She has also competed in 4 Olympic Games and held both British and Commonwealth records. Her determination, perseverance and strength were well documented on the track but she had to muster all her reserves off the track to deal with being falsely accused of taking performance enhancing drugs. It was a battle that tore her whole life apart, but one that she finally won and after being proved innocent in 1996 she went on to win another medal in the Commonwealth Games in 1998.
Since retiring from Athletics she has dedicated herself to a number of causes including being a Non Executive Director of the Manchester NHS Primary Trust and Chief Ambassador for the National Charity Street Games. Most recently Diane has set up a charity, the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation which makes high quality athletics coaching available to young people, particularly those in disadvantaged areas.
An inspiration to all, Diane talks passionately about what it takes to get to the very top of your career, whilst reflecting on some of the barriers that were put in her way and how she bounced back from them.
Diane is also an author, a BBC TV presenter, has an honorary doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University and some people may recognise her from her appearance on “I’m a Celebrity – Get me out of here!”
Diane will be joining us for a while in our Living Library and also as part of our panel for the Equality, Diversity and Me session.
Our 2nd keynote speaker, Sharon Bailey is an inspiration to business women everywhere. Leaving school at 16 with no qualifications, Sharon described herself as a 'numpty from Bolton' who was told that she wouldn't amount to anything, and that the best she could hope for would be a factory job. Sent on the YTS (youth training) scheme, somebody saw a spark in Sharon, and against all the odds gave her work experience in his insurance company.
A couple of decades later, having worked her way up, Sharon found herself disillusioned with the way in which most insurance companies sold policies - based on commission earned and not what's right for the customer. Instead of moaning about it or putting up with it, Sharon decided to do something about it and took the plunge to set up Primecover with a mission to give every customer the right policy. And when she finds that there isn't the right policy in the market...well she simply creates it!
For 5 years she grew the company steadily and built a solid small team. But like many of us she struggled with how to take her business to the next level and had that sinking feeling and nagging voice of self-doubt that she ought to be 'doing more' - but didn't know 'what' or 'how'. Fast forward just 6 months and wow how that changed!
Sharon will be joining us in our Living Library and will also be running a workshop.

A self-confessed inspirational and self-improvement book addict, Mary's kick in the pants to define her life, recognise love and turn her work into her legacy was the last taboo itself - death. Specifically the death of her mother. Mary enabled her mother to achieve the death of her choice at home from which came a realisation that trained healthcare professionals know things the public don’t about end of life options and care; and families and patients know things healthcare staff don’t about what matters most to them. Neither can make a difference unless they talk about it. As a result she started a social enterprise Conversations for Life which addresses the last taboo, one conversation at a time.

Cecilia Rathe - It's about your attitude not your age!
In 2010, in her mid 50's, Cecilia was told that she had skin cancer. The cancer treatment left her skin raw and irritated, and the products she tried didn't help. Originally a solicitor by profession, Cecilia is also a qualified aromatherapist. So she used her knowledge of the benefits of natural organic oils to make her own products, which really worked. In 2012 , following further training, extensive research and testing, and with determination and total disregard for her age, she launched her own skincare company, Mary Elizabeth Bodycare Ltd., which develops and sells natural, organic, eco-friendly products. Join Cecilia to share her story and the tools she relies upon to survive and succeed, and why she believes that age really is just a number!
