You are invited to attend a meeting of the Northern Lipid Forum, in association with HEART UK, to be held at Delta Hotels by Marriott, MetroCentre, Gateshead on Thursday 16th October at 6.30pm.

The meeting will be preceded by a buffet at 6pm, to which you are cordially invited.

  • Dr Su Ann Tee, Consultant Endocrinologist & Diabetologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, who will present:
    “Gateshead Secondary Prevention: A Holistic Blueprint Fit for the Future”
  • Dr Sarah McCloskey, Consultant Nephrologist and Physician, Clinical Lead for Nephrology at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and CKD Lead for the NENC Renal Network. Dr McCloskey will speak on:
    “The Importance of CKD in CVD Patients and How This Can Be Managed in Primary Care”


The event will be chaired by Dr Peter Carey, Honorary Clinical Lecturer, University of Sunderland Medical School, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at South Tyneside and Sunderland and Regional Lipid Advisor, Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria.


The Northern Lipid Forum came into being in 1995 as a means of bringing state of the art lectures on lipids and atherosclerosis to specialists in the Northern Region but under the auspices of HEART UK, the forum now extends an invitation to GPs, commissioners, healthcare scientists, researchers and other members of the multidisciplinary teams that design develop and deliver services to patients at risk of premature cardiovascular disease.

The meeting is supported by third party sponsorship from Amgen, Sanofi, Daaichi Sankyo, Novartis and Amarin. The industry partners have not been involved in the meeting content or speaker selection.




Meet our speakers


Dr Peter Carey, Honorary Clinical Lecturer – University of Sunderland Medical School

Dr Peter Carey is a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at South Tyneside and Sunderland and Regional Lipid Advisor to Health Innovation –North East and North Cumbria.

Dr Carey qualified from the University of Sheffield and trained initially in Liverpool before returning to the North East to undertake his MD in post prandial metabolism in type 2 diabetes and complete his specialty training.

His main clinical interests are Lipidology, Type 1 Diabetes and Thyroid disorders. He is actively involved as an Honorary Lecturer in undergraduate teaching at the University of Sunderland Medical School.

His work with Health Innovation NENC involves the implementation of the NHS England Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Programme through lipid optimisation, increased use of emerging therapies and identifying individuals with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia through the use of primary care data searches.


Dr Su Ann Tee is a Consultant Endocrinologist who completed speciality training in the North-East of England following her undergraduate medical studies at Newcastle University. Following her consultant appointment in 2022 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, Dr Tee established an innovative cardio-renal-metabolic multidisciplinary team (MDT) in collaboration with colleagues, that supports individuals across the spectrum of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in reducing their future cardiovascular risk.

The Gateshead Secondary Prevention team’s pioneering work was recognised with the Bright Ideas in Health Award for Outstanding NHS Industry Collaboration (November 2024) and as a finalist in the Medipex NHS Innovation Awards (June 2025). She is passionate about driving innovation in healthcare and is a strong advocate for multi-speciality collaboration to improve patient outcomes.


Dr Sarah McCloskey is a Consultant Nephrologist and Clinical Lead for Renal Medicine and Acute Oncology at Sunderland Royal Hospital specialising in transplant medicine alongside acute and general internal medicine. Dr McCloskey completed her medical training at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and completed her postgraduate medical and speciality nephrology training within the north east of England. Her areas of interest include the care of young adults and adolescents with kidney disease and medical education. Dr McCloskey is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer for the University of Sunderland Medical School teaching across all 5 year groups and is the medical lead for Year 4 students based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Dr McCloskey is also the CKD Work stream Lead for the North East and North Cumbria Renal Network focusing on CKD prevention and identification.
