Event description
Join us as we launch the Northern Writers' Awards 2020 with advice for new and aspiring writers looking for publication opportunities

About this Event

Hosted by New Writing North in partnership with Hachette Children's Books, with thanks to Sheffield Hallam University for their support.

New Writing North and Hachette are delighted to be taking the Northern Writers’ Awards to Sheffield with a roadshow dedicated to supporting children’s writers.

We’ll be joined by Fiction Editorial Director of Hachette Children's Group, Kate Agar; Senior Commissioning and Managing Editor Rachel Wade; and Senior Commissioning Editor Tig Wallace. They will be sharing their expertise and experience with us across a series of panels.

Confirmed speakers also include the children’s agent and judge, Chloe Seager, and the author and winner of the 2019 prize, James Harris.

The roadshow will include sessions on the author-agent relationship, the publishing process, and advice for writers considering applying for the Northern Writers’ Awards.

Tea and coffee will be provided.

Tickets cost £5. A limited number of free tickets are available to people for whom this is prohibitive. Please contact Grace Keane grace@newwritingnorth.com

One-to-one slots

We can offer a limited number of one-to-one slots available. If you would like the opportunity to discuss your children's writing project with a Hachette Children's Group editor, please use this form. You must have booked for the event to be allocated a pitching session. On the form, you will be asked to provide:

  • A short synopsis of the writing project you’re working on (up to one page)
  • An extract from the beginning of your novel (max 500 words)

We will be closing the form on Friday 24 January and will allocate one-to-one sessions by Monday 27 January. If more one-to-ones are requested than there are spaces available, we will try to match the most appropriate work to the expertise of the publishing professionals available.

Please be aware that the one-to-one sessions will take place between 5pm - 6pm.

The Northern Writers' Awards are produced by New Writing North with support from Northumbria University, Arts Council England and a range of industry partners. The awards support work-in-progress by writers based in the North of England.
