Anti-hero - handsome gentleman becomes anti hero through immoral pursuits
Romance
Damsel in distress - vulnerable character desired and degraded.
During the nineteenth century ‘supernatural' meant many things. The difficulty in defining what the term meant exactly is what made it so appealing.
