Event Details

Norton Folgate & Cripplegate Lost 6.30pm Wednesday 17 May Start: Liverpool St Station - Bishopsgate exit (street level - top of the escalators)

In association with the London Metropolitan Archives' Word on the Street: Migration - let's talk about it Festival, the Museum of Walking is delighted to announce that Tom Bolton, author of Vanished City and London's Lost Rivers will accompany us on a tour of Norton Folgate & Cripplegate.

Explore two of London's lost migrant neighbourhoods. Norton Folgate is Spitalfields lesser known cousin, home to Huguenots and many more, while Cripplegate, entombed beneath the Barbican, was London's first Jewish quarter and an outsider refuge for centuries.

Once a thriving parish, home to numerous street markets and soon to become the heartland of the Jewish East End, remnants of theses neighbourhoods are in little evidence.  That's unless you are in the company of arch Lost Neighbourhood detective, Tom Bolton, who on this walkshop will draw us into Norton Folgate and  neighbouring Cripplegate, to step out onto their once busy streets.

Cripplegate was subsumed by the Barbican, although remnants of its waves of migrants remain, in the street names. In recent years Norton Folgate has begun to develop a reputation as the last bastion against property-developer driven capitalism, holding out against the influx of high rise offices as the borders of Hackney and Tower Hamlets merge with the City of London.

See familiar places from a new angle, discover hidden gems and vantage points to see into this neighbourhood's glorious past - let's discover what has Norton Folgate and Cripplegate Lost?

Tom will be signing copies of his books. A special discount for the books will be made available to those on the walk.

Norton Folgate & Cripplegate Lost 6.30pm Wednesday 17 May Start: Liverpool St Station - Bishopsgate exit (street level - top of the escalators)

On-line: £15 / £10 NUS concession. On the day £20
