Join us for Nothing to Declare - An Inspirational Story

Our cast will be reading from Nothing to Declare which is the uncompromising, tough and often darkly funny autobiography of Mark Dempster, who tells the story of how his life descended into alcoholism, drug dealing and homelessness before a near death experience finally took him on the road to redemption. Mark, who was helped in his journey by being a vendor for 4 years, is now a successful counsellor helping others to take that same journey, having turned his life around.

Storytelling LIVE in your Living Room

In this exclusive event the actors will read straight from the book performing as the characters, on Zoom. You can join us live and enjoy what will feel like a drama being performed just for you in your own living room.

The story will be read in episodes over 7 days (if you miss any you can watch on catch-up) and reveals Mark's extraordinary previous life, from Glasgow to London, from the hash markets of Morocco and Nepal to the heroine slums of India via a hell hole jail in Span and ultimately back to the streets of the UK's capital and homelessness.

We'll also be inviting special guests to discuss the new challenges that have come from the recent lockdown and how that might impact the homeless situation and the well-being of vendors. On our first event on 7th July, join Dom Littlewood after the reading as he talks to Mark Dempster and Sabrina Cohen - Hatton.

The Big Issue Foundation

The Big Issue Foundation was founded to compliment the self-help ethos of The Big Issue Magazine. Our frontline team work alongside the magazine to provide housing, healthcare, training, education, and employment support. Whilst Big Issue vendors haven’t been able to work during this crisis their health and wellbeing has been The Big Issue Foundation's focus. We have been connecting vendors with services that are placing them in short term hotel accommodation, as well as providing support alongside other vital charities on tenancies, mental health, domestic violence and accessing food banks. Your donation will ensure we can carry on supporting Big Issue vendors during this difficult time and beyond.
