Description

*Please note: this conference is now sold out - if you have any questions, please contact politicalaffairs@nottingham.ac.uk*

Featuring masterclasses, debates and pecha kucha showcases of best practice in research impact on policy and public engagement - delivered by experts from Government, Research Funders and NGOs including the Wellcome Trust, RCUK, ESRC and the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology - this one-day conference seeks to bring together University of Nottingham researchers and academics from all Faculties/ Schools with an interest in/ experience of working in the public engagement/ policy impact space. Organised by the newly formed Nottingham Public Engagement Network, we want to explore the University’s refreshed approach to engaging the public, policymakers and global communities of practice with our research, teaching and everything in between.

The day will explore both the practical (speakers such as Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff (University of Nottingham) and Dr Michael Scott (BBC Historian and University of Warwick) will be joined by the ESRC, RCUK and Wellcome Trust to discuss “what works” in terms of an institutional approach to public engagement) as well as the wider political context that frame the role of universities and ‘expertise’. Recent Brexistential challenges, including the suggestion that the public are “bored of experts” have prompted many in the university and research community to re-examine the role of expertise and evidence in public life and political debate.

The day will also feature masterclasses on first steps and next steps, presenting research findings for a non-expert audience, writing pathways to impact into bids and measuring and demonstrating impact.

This event is free for academic and professional staff from the University of Nottingham.
