An inspiring and uplifting operatic journey to rediscover our cities through the voices of people who have been homeless.

About this event

Unfortunately, as a result of the Red Extreme heat warning issued by the Met Office, we have decided to postpone this event.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are making this decision in order to safeguard the wellbeing of audiences and performers, some of whom will be more vulnerable to the extreme weather conditions.

We are aiming to reschedule this event, and will be announcing a new date as soon as possible.

At Streetwise Opera we are very grateful for your support and understanding in these circumstances.

“We laughed, we cried, we sang along… everything you want from opera!”
“Inspiring, joyful and uplifting… You had me bawling with a phenomenal night of storytelling and singing!”
“Can homeless people rise to the level of professional artists and captivate an audience? YES! THEY! CAN! It was the most intense half hour show I've seen in a while. This lot don't sing with their mouths, they sing with their hearts!!!”

Award-winning Streetwise Opera are back with their irreverent, beautifully bold and unique brand of opera, always ready to ask the difficult questions – with a huge smile on their faces.

Join them at Nottingham Playhouse for the launch of the Re:sound festival, an inspiring and uplifting operatic journey to rediscover our cities through the voices of people who have been homeless. The year-long festival will see a dozen world-class artists and over 200 participants in Streetwise workshops co-create a cycle of nine micro-operas that celebrate the spirit of Nottingham, Manchester and London.

The 25-minute launch event will include a preview performance of the first two new micro-operas to be written in Nottingham, interviews with composers Alison Willis and Tim Lole, and a behind-the-scenes look at the way these pieces were co-created by artists and participants in Streetwise Opera workshops at Nottingham Playhouse and Emmanuel House.

The first two micro-operas explore the history of Nottingham, from the Luddite rebellion of the 1800s to the changing face of the city centre during the 1900s. The pieces are a statement against oppression and injustice.

This event is the first stop in an inspiring and exciting journey. The Re:sound calendar includes a second sharing in December, and a final performance in March 2023, with all nine micro-operas produced in Nottingham, Manchester and London.

Light refreshments will be served.

Tickets are FREE. If you wish to support Streetwise Opera's work, you can add a Donation to your ticket on EventBrite.

Streetwise Opera is an opera company that enables people who’ve experienced homelessness to find inspiration and empowerment while they rebuild their lives and identities. We support participants to develop as creative people and, as we amplify their voices, change how society views homelessness. We engage world-class artists, both established and emerging, to co-create bold new work and reimagine traditional repertoire. We create opera that is for everyone and, by bringing together diverse voices, change how society views opera.

Emmanuel House Support Centre is an independent charity that supports homeless, vulnerable and isolated adults in Nottingham. Its main aim is to prevent people becoming homeless and to support those who are homeless into accommodation. It provides diverse and accessible services that meet people’s basic needs. As well as delivering direct support, Emmanuel House helps people connect with any one of the 100+ support services and organisations it is in touch with. People are supported to access the service that best suits their needs around mental health, substance misuse, domestic violence or offending histories.

Nottingham Playhouse is one of the country’s leading producing theatres and creates a range of productions throughout the year, from timeless classics to innovative family shows and adventurous new commissions. The Playhouse aims to be a space where everyone feels they belong, and its stage is a space to tell diverse stories that reflect the city of Nottingham. The theatre's wide-reaching participation programmes create life-changing experiences for the community and also support the next generation of theatre-makers in the East Midlands through its extensive Amplify programme.
