Day 1 - Demystifying Mental Health at Work

This experiential masterclass will support delegates in understanding the most prominent areas of mental ill-health that are jeopardising performance as well as the least understood mental health difficulties.

We will explore anxiety and depression and how both of these mental illnesses manifest, considering potential triggers and how these can be minimised in the working environment. The session will move on to look into the signs, symptoms and indicators of anxiety and depression and how the severity of each, paying attention to post and pre-diagnosis. The options for treatment and support will be covered, considering both medical treatment and non-medical alternatives.

As we delve deeper into the spectrum of mental health issues, we will unpick the symptoms of psychosis and suicidal thoughts and challenge our perceptions and common stereotypes around them. Fear is strongly connected to the way we view mental health issues and reflecting on our own views is a powerful way to begin seeing things differently.

This knowledge and understanding will help us support our colleagues better and strengthen the relationships we have with one another. We are aiming to make the working environment safer and more comfortable for people who have symptoms of mental ill-health to reinforce the connection that employees have with their employers. The result is that we are introducing a culture of openness and transparency into our working lives, as well as trust and all of these components act as great healers for mentally unwell people.

The legalities surrounding mental health issues can seem complex and difficult to digest. We will have our legal expert covering all the essential aspects of law we need to be familiar with. This is not only to protect ourselves but also those we have a duty of care towards whilst they are under our responsibility. Our experienced solicitor will share their expert knowledge to ensure we are equipped with the right information when it comes to legal requirements and offer ongoing support as and when it is needed.

Effective communication is core to supporting and alleviating the emotional distress of anyone experiencing mental health problems. Our sessions will address the essential communication skills we need when working with someone who is mentally unwell and we will experiment with these during the day. We will consider the use of language and become clearer on what is and is not appropriate to say and touch on some basic counselling skills that can be used to make our conversations safer.

The day will begin to close with a practical demonstration of what can be done in and outside of work to introduce and implement a mentally healthy workplace culture. Our special guest from the world of workplace wellbeing will deliver a highly-engaging and interactive 45-minute self-care slot to allow us to experience for ourselves what kinds of wellbeing strategies we can adopt to stay well both inside and outside of work.

Day 2 - Stress, Resilience and Relaxation

This energising full-day masterclass will explore the manifestation of stress in both the brain and body and thereon the impact of long-term stress on our physical being. We will explore the consequences of chronic stress including adrenal fatigue and burnout as well as related health conditions.

We will engage in the exploration of our personal responses to stress through becoming more aware of personal patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour. This enhanced self-awarenesswill give us greater control of our ability to combat our stressors at the earliest stage. This supports an early interventionapproach to managing stress through monitoring our stress-levels regularly and being empowered to take personal responsibility for our individual responses to stress and resist destructive behaviours.

The second half of the session will introduce the concept of resilience and unpick what it really means. Resilience is much more than just the ability to 'bounce-back' and we will consider what how we all have different levels of resilience that are determined by many factors such as our values and belief systems, the language we use, memories that we have and the decisions we have made. We will look at the influencers of resilience and what we can do to embrace a resilient lifestyle, moving beyond the use of short-term healthy or unhealthy coping strategies. This will give us the clarity around which areas of our lives we would like to apply change to and refreshed perspectives on how we might do so.

The session will provide a range of practical tools and techniques derived from psychotherapy and personal growth methodologies. Delegates will be equipped with a powerful set of methods that can be used as instant stress-reducers in both our personal and professional lives. Being able to manage our stress in this way will see us having more headspace, energy and enthusiasm for the things that matter which results in us reaping the rewards of increased levels of productivity and performance.

The grand finale will be a game-style review of learning using Kwizzbit, the interactive quiz! This fun, power-packed quiz will really bring out the competitive-edge in our delegates as we are tested on not only our ability to answer questions correctly, but also in the quickest time! The winner will be gifted an enviable prize which is guaranteed to improve personal wellbeing!!
