Notts Celebration for UN International Day of Disabled People
Event Information
Description
On Thursday 1st December 6.00pm – 9.00pm Notts UNISON and Nottinghamshire County Council Disabled Employees Support Network (DESN) have organised a major event in Nottingham as part of the celebration for the UN International Day of Disabled People (which is 3rd December).
This will be the biggest gathering focusing on disability issues held in Nottingham for many years.
We will be celebrating those amongst us with any form of impairment and will also be highlighting the multitude of disabling barriers that people deal with on a daily basis. There will be multimedia presentations, a major discussion with national, regional and local speakers, and even a chance to learn some practical things such as a sign language taster session, how to sponsor and/or foster a guide dog puppy (to socialise it before it is trained) and even a sports/relaxation breakout room and we have some very special guests recently returned from the Paralympics in Rio!
Large committee rooms within Antenna will be used for the major debate and Q&A session on Employment for Disabled People and also the taster training sessions and sports activities. There is a cafe/bar area that will be used to screen short videos relating to aspects of disability on large scale projection screens and TV's on a rolling basis throughout the evening, each will have an introduction by a speaker and sign language interpreter. The idea is that those attending can choose between staying in one area or dip in and out of the different sessions that will be running concurrently throughout the evening.
There will be a free buffet and we want to encourage everyone to attend, this is a real celebration in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, it’s about making everyone aware, not just those already dealing with a disabling society. Do yourself a favour and come along to an amazing evening! The event will be opened by the Leader of the County Council, Alan Rhodes.
