Novel London First Chapter Readings at Waterstones, Covent Garden
Event Information
Description
Novel London returns to Waterstones in Covent Garden in September to showcase three novelists!
Our aim is to create a great literary night out, bring people into bookshops and connect readers with audiences - in person and online.
Come along and listen to novelists reading the opening chapter to an audience, which will be recorded for the web.
1. LAXMI HARIHARAN is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. A one-time journalist with The Independent, she also blogs for the Huffington Post, has written for The Guardian and has been featured in many publications including The Times of India, The Economic Times, The Telegraph and Verve. Laxmi will be reading from her newest release Taken - A Many Lives Novel. Three years ago Jai let the only woman he ever loved, walk out of his life, but Aria’s back now. Except she is in danger. And this time Jai will do anything, even break his vow to protect his city, to keep her safe. A fast paced urban fantasy romance featuring shifters set in a near future, where successive economic downturns in the West have resulted in refugees seeking shelter in the East.
2. ELIZABETH WOODCRAFT grew up on a working class housing estate in Essex. She was a mod and worked in the local milk bar. After attending Birmingham University she taught English in Leicestershire and the Loire Valley. On her return she worked for the National Women’s Aid Federation and subsequently read for the Bar. During her time at the Bar, working from the chambers of Michael Mansfield QC, she represented Greenham Common Peace Protesters, Anti-Apartheid demonstrators, striking miners and Clause 28 activists, as well as battered women, children who suffered sex abuse in and out of their homes and gay parents seeking parental rights.
Her first two published novels were Good Bad Woman and Babyface (HarperCollins), crime novels featuring barrister Frankie Richmond. Good Bad Woman was short listed for a CWA prize for best first crime novel, and won a Lambda award in the US.
Throughout her life, Liz has been writing – plays, stories, and she has always kept a diary. Her book A Sense of Occasion, published in 2014 is a collection of short stories about 4 working class girls living in the 60s. Her latest novel, Beyond the Beehive, out in September 2016, continues the story of Sandra and Linda, in the year 1965.
She is an occasional newspaper reviewer on BBC Radio Essex and recently appeared in the BBC East show ‘Living in ’66 – pop, pirates and postmen.’
She lives in London with her partner.
Elizabeth will be reading from Beyond the Beehive - a story of female friendship and the search for love and adventure at a time of political and social upheaval.
3. CHRISTOPHER BOWDEN lives in south London. He is the author of five novels, each with a colour theme. The Purple Shadow, set in Paris and London, is the latest. His previous books have been praised variously by Andrew Marr, Julian Fellowes, Sir Derek Jacobi, and Shena Mackay. Of his third novel, The Red House, Sir Derek said, “Very entertaining, cleverly constructed and expertly paced. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Christopher will be reading from The Purple Shadow.
