Welcome to The Innovation Network's Spring event of the 18/19 calendar.

We are delighted to have the following leading technlogists to share the latest in their organisation's development of novel materials:

This event is being kindly hosted by Diamond Light Source Ltd, and there will be an optional tour afterwards (3pm) of their facilities.

Geoff Hassall, Innovation Development Manager, Oxford Instrument Plasma Technology

About Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology and Geoff:

Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology is a leading provider of etch and deposition process solutions for nanometre-sized features, nanolayers, and the controlled growth of nanostructures. These solutions are based on core technologies in plasma, ion beam and atomic layer deposition and etch. Products range from clustered cassette-to-cassette platforms for high-throughput production processing to compact stand-alone systems for R&D.

Geoff is a plasma physicist by training, an engineer and technologist during the working day, but at heart is an Inventor and an innovator. His research career started looking at pollution control using pulsed plasma technology, then via AWE Aldermaston and high energy pulse-power physics and engineering, finally arriving in the semiconductor world around the turn of the century to study plasmas for the production, modification and manipulation of materials and surfaces at the nanoscale. In recent years, he has been developing his Innovation team to support current OIPT products, and develop the products yet to come.

Keith Parsons, Research & Development Manager, MacDermid Autotype

About MacDermid Autotype and Keith:

MacDermid Autotype is a world leading industrial manufacturer of coated films and blended liquids for use in the printing, automotive and electronics industries. Since 1868, Autotype have been leading innovators of high-quality precision coated films found e.g. in overlay films for membrane touch switches, stencil products and cleaning chemicals for screen printing, products for film insert moulding (FIM/IMD) and graphic display films.

Keith is a highly experienced R&D chemist and Manager, whose research career spans time with Imation UK Ltd, 3M Research Ltd (Minnesota) and now Macdermid. He leads a team that develops new products to serve the market needs of MacDermid Autotype in the areas of coated polymer films for industrial and automotive applications.

Jonathan Moghal, Product Development Scientist, Crown Technology

About Crown Technology and Jonny:

Crown Technology, UK, is one of Crown Holding's two main R&D centres, which are the focal point for innovation initiatives. The other is located near Chicago, Illinois. Teams in each support customers and operations around the world. Each centre includes pilot facilities for metal packaging and printing technology, where extensive tests can be conducted on new packaging products in an environment that replicates customer conditions. These facilities, along with the use of computer aided design (CAD) and modelling, enable the success rate of new products in the marketplace.

Jonathan Moghal is a product development scientist at Crown Packaging. He was awarded his Phd in 2008 for his work into structural property relationships in electron donating systems for potential photovoltaic applications. He later moved to the Department of Materials at the University of Oxford to work as KTP Associate between Department of Materials and Oxford Advanced Surfaces on the development of nano-structured coatings. He joined Crown thereafter and has been involved with the development of new materials for metal packaging.

Lunch: 12.45pm

End: 3.00pm

Optional tour: 3.00pm. This is a tour of Diamond Light Source's facilities. Numbers are limited, so when you have booked please indicate your wish to be on the list by emailing us here. The tour will last approximately 45 minutes.


There will be a security check on arrival at the outer entrance and also again at the building entrance. So please bring photo ID and allow extra time.


We are kindly being hosted by Diamond Light Source Ltd at their premises in Didcot, Oxfordshire.


Parking on site is available without charge.
