Description

Hi Ladies, This will be the 7th meeting of the Afro Reads book club for women from the African, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-American communities. The book club usually meets every six weeks and the cost is £4 + booking fee per person.

This month we will be reading the Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison the Nobel Prize –Winning Author of Beloved and Winner of the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for achievement in American fiction.

Toni Morrison’s novel immerses us in the tragic, torn lives of a poor black family – Pauline, Cholly, Sam and Pecola – in post-Depression 1940s Ohio. Unlovely and unloved, Pecola prays each night for blue eyes like those of her privileged white schoolfellows. At once intimate and expansive, unsparing in its truth-telling, The Bluest Eye shows how the past savagely defines the present.

Members of the book club will be given the opportunity to contribute to the review of this book for Enfield Libraries.

Ladies, please note that the last date for the year for Afro Reads will be 16th December 2017 a social lunch – venue to be confirmed we will be discussing Iyanla Vanzant - In the Meantime.
