Official opening of the new Civil Engineering Building housing the National Research Facility for Infrastructure Sensing (NRFIS).

About this Event

The new Civil Engineering Building, housing NRFIS, is a new state-of-the-art research facility hosted by the University of Cambridge. It brings together specialist engineering facilities and sensor development capabilities under one roof. It offers an interdisciplinary centre for cutting edge research to explore the development and application of novel sensor systems at a range of scales.

NRFIS is part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure & Cities (UKCRIC) portfolio of research and innovation facilities funded through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Opening event - Programme

12.30 - 13.15: Lunch refreshments and registration for attendees

13.15 - 13.30: Introduction and welcome by

  • Professor Simon Guest, Head of Civil Engineering, and
  • Professor Giulia Viggiani, NRFIS Academic Lead

13.30 - 14.40: Tour of the NRFIS facilities with laboratory demonstrations

14.40 - 15.00 : Refreshments

15.00 - 15.45: Formal opening and speeches by:

  • Andrew Wyllie CBE, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE)
  • Professor Lord Robert Mair CBE, Head of the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction
  • Professor Richard Prager, Head of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge
