N.S. Rose is the author of a series of historical fiction novels following the ancient Bearnshaw family through the Plantagenet and Tudor eras. Real history is entwined with rumour and legend.
N.S.Rose will talk about and read from her first two novels in the Bearnshaw series which are based around Bearnshaw Tower, a real Tower which stood on the moor tops around Cliviger in Burnley but was undermined in the 1800s and fell. Burnley’s Towneley Hall also features in the books.
Her first novel ‘Bearnshaw: Legend of the Whyte Doe’, dramatically retells fantastical story the Tower’s prior inhabitant, the beautiful and intelligent, nature-loving Sibyl Bearnshaw. Unfortunately Sibyl was betrothed to Lord William whom she despised and was rumoured to have sold her soul to the Devil with the aid of a local witch, Mother Helston, in order to escape him. She was given the ability to shape-shift and one of her favourite guises was that of a white doe. To this day it's said that if you venture out onto the unwelcoming Cliviger moors in darkness, you may see a huntsman and his black dogs, chasing the Milk White Doe.
The second novel in the series, ‘Bearnshaw II: Triumph of the Red Dragon’ was released in 2016 and has received excellent reviews.
