NTPMI Workshop: Automated Formulation Mindset Workshop

This workshop aims to upskill Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) in the concepts of Automated Formulation by exposing them to World Class practitioners, speakers and the experience of fellow RTPs working in this area, along with a guided tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at the Materials Innovation Factory housed at the University of Liverpool.

Cost: Free of charge. Travel and accommodation for RTPs travelling from outside the Liverpool area will be covered by NTPMI.

Background

In the fast-changing world of automation for material science it is important that RTPs become familiar with increasingly important topics such as Robotics, Machine Learning, Workflow Engineering and Data Handling. This course will equip RTPs to develop a greater understanding of these topics by exposing them to thought leaders in hardware, software and AI as well as hearing from their peers on how the NTPMI programme itself can enhance their future learning and careers. By viewing practical examples of these techniques and equipment in operation, in the Open Access Area Lab of the MIF, it is anticipated that attendees will leave with fresh ideas and knowledge of working solutions for the Materials space and the mindset required to effectively apply these ideas in their respective institutions.

Audience

The workshop is aimed at Research Technical Professionals, or similar who are currently fulfilling this role, working in Materials Formulation anywhere in the UK.

No specific prerequisites are necessary as all materials will be provided but a working knowledge of Materials Chemistry, Formulation and a basic understanding of automation will be useful.

Learning Outcomes

After the course participants should be able to:

  • Determine the most appropriate Automated Formulation equipment and their key specifications
  • Implement Formulation workflows and understand the processes required in defining them
  • Review the data handling requirements of Formulation, including the importance of metadata
  • Appreciate the contribution that Machine Learning and AI are making in the area of Automated Formulation
  • Recognise the critical support RTPs give to the process of Automated Formulation development
  • Network with like-minded peers and professionals
