Nuclear Institute Wales - An Audience With...
Event Information
Description
The Nuclear Institute Wales Branch presents ‘An Audience With’ which is a great opportunity for you to meet and chat with two leaders from the Nuclear Industry in North Wales!
Gwen Parry-Jones, Director of Nuclear Operations at Horizon Nuclear Power, and Stuart Law, Site Director of Wylfa Site at Magnox Ltd, will give informal presentations about their careers and how they have become leaders in their organisations and the nuclear industry.
Presentations will be followed by an informal question and answer session, allowing you to question each leader and understand how you can carve your own path to the top.
Gwen studied physics at Manchester University, then completed a Master's in economics. Starting her nuclear career as a reactor physicist at the Wylfa nuclear power station on Anglesey, she worked as an operator, running the reactor for three years prior to moving to work in Barnwood (then British Energy's offices) as an investment planning analyst. She was offered the finance manager role at Heysham 2 in Lancashire, and from there she moved to Canada, working on the lease of Bruce Power for British Energy.
Following a period as the chairman's Technical Assistant, she became Technical and Safety Manager at Heysham 1 soon after, before being promoted to become the first female Plant Manager at Sizewell B in Suffolk.
She returned to Heysham 1 as Station Director, and is still holds the distinction of becoming the only female Station Director in the UK to this date. In the autumn of 2017, Gwen was asked to take on a role of looking at the long-term strategy for EDF Energy Generation, focusing on creating a sustainable future for the company.
Gwen joined Horizon Nuclear Power in April 2018 as Director of Nuclear Operations, and brings nearly 30 years of experience within the nuclear industry. Having moved home to Anglesey both to live and work, Gwen is also Horizon’s senior representative in North Wales on a day to day basis.
Stuart studied Pure and Theoretical Physics at Liverpool University, UK. He graduated in 1987 and joined the National Nuclear Corporation graduate training programme.
He joined the Physics section at Trawsfynydd Power Station in 1990 where he wrote software for the station data processing system; however, following the announcement of the closure of Trawsfynydd in 1993 he moved to Wylfa joining the physics section where he was responsible for the fuel cycle and day to day liaison with operations.
In 2003 he was appointed Systems Engineering Manager, a post he held for two years before he formed the Project Delivery Group, following the Reactor Services Organisation closure. This group started with a small core of personnel and by the end of its first year had successfully delivered in excess of £20 million worth of work.
In April 2007 Stuart was appointed Deputy Site Manager/ Plant Manager responsible for all day to day activities at Wylfa and in March 2012, he was appointed Site Director of Wylfa. Wylfa is the last Magnox power station to be still generating and will cease generation in December 2015.
