‘Nuclear to X’
Nuclear to X means unlocking the potential of nuclear power to support decarbonisation. Nuclear power is known for producing electricity but the main output from a nuclear reactor is heat. In this presentation, we will discuss UKNNL’s research into utilising nuclear heat describing our work towards the development of digital twins of low carbon manufacturing processes for alternative fuels showing how next generation technology will accelerate decarbonisation in the coming decades.
One line sentence: Low carbon manufacturing processes for alternative fuels showing how next generation technology will accelerate decarbonisation.
Dr Mark Bankhead is the manager of NNL’s chemistry modelling team and a computational/ theoretical chemist with over 20 years of experience working in the nuclear industry. He has acted as a cross-discipline technical lead on a range of projects involving including waste retrieval, risk mitigation and safety, plant performance, digital technology and fundamentals of chemistry in a nuclear context. He currently leads NNL’s research programme into applications of nuclear heat (hydrogen and alternative fuels). He sits on the steering board of the Nuclear Institute Special Interest Group in Digital (DigSiG) and chair of the AI4Nuclear group which reaches over 120 organisations working in the nuclear sector.
