Description

As part of our healthy workforce programme the Health & Wellbeing team will be providing a range of activities to support mental wellbeing. Our Coping with Stress and Building Resilience workshop aims to introduce the concept of stress and its common symptoms. You’ll be given the opportunity to learn and practice various techniques to help you cope with stress. This includes an introduction to mindfulness and compassion based approaches. These aim to help you to take better care of yourself and improve your quality of life at home and work. The workshop lasts for 2 hours and you will be provided with handouts to take away. Sessions will be facilitated by Anna, a clinical psychologist and Kate, a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist who both work at NUH and are experienced mindfulness teachers work.

Everyone attending the course will be offered a free 12 month subscription to Headspace, a guided meditation mindfulness app which helps support some of the techniques discussed on the course.

There will also be information provided about where else to get support and what else is on offer at NUH as part of the Health & Wellbeing programme all of which can support you to build resilience.

After attending this session, there will be an opportunity to learn more about mindfulness by attending an 8 week ‘mindfulness for health and wellbeing’ course. Sessions will be 75 minutes per week with daily practice required in between.  These courses will take place on a Thursday morning.  Details of how to register will be provided at the workshops.

FAQs

Can I attend this workshop in work time?

Yes, if your manager agrees to this. Please speak to them prior to booking.

I'm very busy and find it hard to keep track of events like this. Will you remind me when the session is?

Yes, we'll send out a reminder email to all participants approximately 5 days before the workshop takes place.

Will the workshop make my stress go away?

We'd love to be able to offer a magic pill which just makes all stress go away. Unfortunately it's not that easy and, like anything, coping with stress does require you to take an active role. The techniques we'll cover aren't overnight cures, they require a bit of practice. Some of the techniques covered will feel right for you and others won't - pick the ones which resonate for you. The situations which are causing you stress won't change but your ability to adapt and cope with them can which will help you to cope with them more effectively.

Can I attend the course more than once?
The workshop is a one off session so you won't be able to attend again. You may be able to attend one of the 8 week mindfulness for health and wellbeing courses which will be run at various points throughout the year. We'll also be running some drop in sessions when you can come and chat with Anna and Kate about any of the techniques, ask questions and have a short practice which you'll be able to attend as many times as you like. If you take up the offer of the Headspace subscription, you'll be able to practice each day whenever is most convenient for you.

What if I can no longer attend?

Please cancel your place as per the instructions on your ticket as soon as possible so that someone else can be booked on the workshop. You will be able to book another session at a later date if appropriate.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
No, we'll provide all the handouts. You might want to bring a pen to make any notes and a bottle of water to keep hydrated during the session.

What happens if I find it all really upsetting when thinking about what's making me feel stressed?

Please don't worry if you start to feel emotional during the session. If it does become overwhelming you are able to leave the room to take a breather. One of our team will make sure you're ok and support you to come back into the session if appropriate for you. They will also suggest other options of support if you need it.

How can I contact you if I need to know anything else?

Contact us at healthandwellbeing@nuh.nhs.uk and we'll do our best to help.
