This course focuses on equipping Health and Care workers with practical numeracy skills that are essential in delivering effective and safe care.

This course is delivered as a small-group activity using a range of practical approaches to learning:

  • Interactive Lectures
  • Hands-on Exercises and Practical Demonstrations
  • Group Discussions and Case Study Analysis
  • Q&A Sessions


PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

1. Basic Numeracy in Health and Care

  • Fundamental arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Understanding fractions and decimals in healthcare contexts (e.g., 0.5 litres of fluid, 1/4 of a pill)


2. Accurate Measurement and Data Recording

  • Techniques for measuring patient vitals (e.g., temperature, blood pressure)
  • Recording and interpreting measurements accurately in patient charts


3. Medication Dosage Calculations

  • Basic principles of medication dosage calculation
  • Understanding and converting units (mg, ml, etc.)
  • Practice exercises on calculating and preparing correct dosages


4. Time Management in Patient Care

  • Prioritizing tasks in a healthcare setting
  • Scheduling patient care activities
  • Managing shift patterns and breaks effectively


5. Understanding Health-related Statistics

  • Basic understanding of health statistics (mortality rates, infection rates)
  • Reading and interpreting simple statistical data
  • Application of statistics in everyday health and care scenarios

Sponsorship is provided by Essex County Council for participants who meet the following criteria:

  • Age 19 or above
  • Live or work in Essex
  • UK / EEA citizen with minimum 3 years residency in the UK
  • Does not hold a Maths qualification at GCSE Grade C or higher

Applicants who do not meet these criteria will need to purchase a General Admission ticket to this event.
