Actions and Detail Panel
Tue 6 December 2016, 16:00 – 18:00 GMT
A two-hour twilight session, designed to familiarise delegates with the Numicon approach to teaching mathematics, providing practical opportunities to explore a range of Numicon resources.
Introduction to the rationale behind the Numicon programme
Familiarisation activities: opportunities to explore and investigate the Numicon resources.
Focus on using Numicon to develop fluency and conceptual understanding of key mathematical concepts; numbers and counting, calculation.
Opportunities throughout to reflect on how Numicon supports the development of reasoning and problem solving
The training can be adapted to place a greater focus on a specific age group or area of mathematics
The training includes opportunities to explore and deepen subject knowledge and to reflect on the challenges inherent in mathematics and consider how working with Numicon can support children in meeting these challenges. It provides an opportunity to consider how Numicon can be used by all children to develop fluency, problem solving and mathematical reasoning; the three aims of the National Curriculum.
After this training, delegates will:
- have a deeper understanding of the rationale behind the Numicon programme
- become more familiar with the Numicon approach to teaching mathematics and the resources which support this
- have increased confidence when using Numicon in their own classrooms to develop children’s mathematical understanding
Please note - there is a cost to this event - please see the North Star website for more details www.northstaralliance.org.uk
