NB This is a second level lecture. Participants must have attended Part I - 'FEVER IS YOUR FRIEND' - Nursing People Supportively Through Acute Viral Illness or have studied the booklet 'Nursing Children Supportively through Acute Illness'

Having learned about the root cause of infectious diseases and correct fever management in Part I, this lecture aims to enable parents to understand the mechanisms of common specific conditions, some of which are more chronic than the acute fever stage:

• The appropriate management,

• When to engage the services of health professionals and

• What to expect when they do.

Part one

*Brief revision of management of acute fevers and General Measures

*Cough/ colds - post nasal drip, night cough vs asthma, respiratory syncytial virus and wheeze. What is the worst that can happen?

*Pneumonia - how to spot it and what to do.

*Croup

*Sore throats, tonsils, indications for tonsillectomy.

*Ears -acute middle ear infection, glue ear, wax.

*Diarrhoea and Vomiting

Part two

*Constipation, nutritional, emotional

*Abdominal pain, surgical vs non surgical, grumbling appendix, abdominal migraine

*Conjunctivitis – eye toilet

*Styes and emotion

*Dry eyes

*Blocked sinuses
