Part II of the Nursing Children series by Dr Donegan.
This is a second level lecture. Participants must have attended Part I - Nursing People Supportively Through Acute Viral Illness or have studied the booklet 'Nursing Children Supportively through Acute Illness'
Having learned about the root cause of infectious diseases and correct fever management in Part I, this lecture aims to enable parents to understand the mechanisms of common specific conditions, some of which are more chronic than the acute fever stage:
• The appropriate management,
• When to engage the services of health professionals and
• What to expect when they do.
Part one
*Cough/ colds - post nasal drip, night cough vs asthma, respiratory syncytial virus and wheeze. What is the worst that can happen?
*Pneumonia - how to spot it and what to do.
*Ears - glue ear, acute middle ear infection, wax.
*Sore throats, tonsils, indications for tonsillectomy.
*Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Part two
*Abdominal pain, surgical vs non surgical, grumbling appendix, abdominal migraine
*Constipation, nutritional, emotional.
*Conjunctivitis – eye toilet
*Febrile Convulsions
*Meningitis
*Croup
*Blocked sinuses
*Styes
*Miscellaneous – green sputum, foreskins, hiatus hernias
