Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have played a key role across all aspects of health and care to stop the spread of the virus and to minimise its impact on individuals, families and communities, whilst continuing to deliver safe, high quality health and care services.

During this time, nurses have led important research related to the pandemic. The Chief Nursing Officer for NHS England’s national nursing research team has been curating and collating a sample of this ongoing research; the resulting portfolio provides an important resource and demonstrates clearly the importance of what can be achieved through nurse leadership in research.

Building on a successful event that was held on 6th May 2021, the aims of this second event are:

to share knowledge and increase understanding of the important research undertaken by the nursing community
to take pride in the quality and impact of nursing research
to inspire others to get involved as nurse researchers and research leaders
to provoke discussions about future research priorities that might address the consequences of the pandemic.

The event will be opened by by Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England (@CNOEngland) and Professor Mark Radford, Chief Nurse of Health Education England and Deputy CNO for England (@MRadford_HEECN). The event will respond to feedback from the previous event by showcasing a snapshot of ongoing research studies being led by nurses. Four experienced researchers will explore gaps in our knowledge and the methods they are using to address these. Each presenter will share and analyse the findings from their work in order to stimulate discussion on the implications for practice, service delivery, education, workforce development and well-being, and patient experience. There will also be the opportunity to pose questions to the panellists.

The session is particularly relevant to:

nurses involved in the delivery of patient care and management of health and care services
clinical academics and research nurses working in health and care organisations
nursing academics and nurse researchers working in higher education institutions.

However, topics that impact on nursing also impact on other aspects of health and social care; colleagues from other professional groups and disciplines are very welcome to participate.
