Event description
What to expect from your newborn baby, how to respond to their cues and how to feed and interact with them to support their developing brain

About this Event

This free, informal workshop for pregnant women living in Islington and their partners/supporters offers the chance to learn about babies' early development after birth and how to feed their baby responsively and effectively to support this, as well as the opportunity to discuss their own questions and concerns. Understanding normal newborn behaviour and why it happens helps parents know what to expect – and what not to expect! - from their baby once he or she is here. Parents will learn about responsive feeding, skin to skin contact, establishing breastfeeding, and how to see the world through their baby’s eyes.

• Building a close and loving relationship with your baby and understanding the effects this has

• Responding to your baby’s needs

• The benefits of skin contact with your baby

• Responsive feeding (however your baby may be fed)

• How to recognise whether your baby is feeding enough

• Getting breastfeeding off to a good start

• When and how to get help with breastfeeding

Partners or other significant supporters are actively encouraged to come but please book a space for them too. You must be an Islington resident to attend and we recommend coming along between 30-36 weeks of pregnancy. This is a two-hour session - there will be a short break during which refreshments are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own food if you need something more substantial.

For more information please contact us on 020 3316 8439 or email whh-tr.IslingtonBreastfeedingPeerSupport@nhs.net

Breastfeeding Islington (part of Bright Start Islington) is a free service available to all Islington families to support them in their baby feeding choices before and after birth. Support is offered on the postnatal wards at Whittington and UCL hospitals, by telephone and at drop-in breastfeeding support groups across the borough. You can find out more about us at islington.gov.uk/breastfeeding.
