Event description

Description

The government's white paper will force every school to convert to an academy, will end the requirement to have elected parent governors, will abolish Qualified Teacher Status and will signal the end of the education system as a national service.

It also takes the governments' attacks on teachers terms and conditions much further than before. Existing national pay and conditions would not apply automatically to any school. The School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document would be abolished and the Burgundy Book agreements would wither away.

This would affect teachers in maintained schools but also teachers in existing academies, most of which follow national terms and conditions (including all academies in Oxfordshire).

Teachers stand to lose:

  • A national pay structure for all schools
  • The right to any progression during your career
  • The limit of 195 working days and 1265 directed hours a year
  • PPA time
  • Sick pay above the legal minimum of £87.55 a week with no pay for the first three days of sickness
  • Maternity pay rights above the legal minimum
  • Existing policies and procedures on absence, paternity, adoption, grievance, disciplinary and capability.

The NUT thinks we must ballot for strike action to defend these rights.

Come along and find out more. The last half hour of this meeting will be an NUT Members' Meeting which will deal with general business.
