Event description

Description

A seminar for health professionals to introduce the use of nutrigenomics in practice. Our seminars can be taken in any order, however, this seminar is a good introduction if you are new to nutrigenomics.

The seminar will include: an introduction to inheritance and genetics; why, when and things to consider when choosing a DNA test/ report; how to read and use test results; and analysis and interpretation - starting with single gene/ SNP effects and building up to simple pathway analysis including vitamin A lifecycle, vitamin D sensitivity, caffeine metabolism, alcohol detoxification and the methionine cycle (introducing methylation).

By the end of the seminar you will have good knowledge of the most frequently analysed genes and SNPs and understand how professional genotype analysis can be used as part of the nutritional therapy and functional medicine tool kit.

The genes covered affect almost all body systems so the seminar will provide valuable information for any health professional using nutrigenomics in practice.

AGENDA

1. Introduction - Genetics, Epigenetics and Precision Medicine

2. Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics

A detailed examination of the genes that are commonly used in the context of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics, such as:

Vitamins - Vitamin A - BCM01, Vitamin D - VDR, GC) & Vitamin K - VKORC1 (see Methylation for B vitamins, and Oxidative Stress for vitamins C and E)

Minerals - Potassium/ Sodium - ACE/ AGT and Iron - HFE

Oxidative Stress & Antioxidant need - GSS, GSTs - Glutathione, Vitamins C and E

Stimulant Response - ALDH2 and ADH - Alcohol, and CYP1A2 - Caffeine

Introduction to Methylation & B Vitamins - MTHFR, MTR and MTRR

3. Case Studies

Incorporating DNA testing and analysis as part of the nutritional therapy/ functional medicine tool kit.
