Nutrigenomics In Practice: Methylation

The seminar is designed for nutritional therapists and healthcare professionals to learn more about the genes, variants and nutrient interactions that impact methylation and to gain the confidence to use this knowledge in clinical practice.
1. Introduction - Genetics, Epigenetics and Personalised Health
Foundational principals of nutrigenomics in a functional medicine context. Chromosomes, genes and variants. Genetic susceptibilities and resiliance. How nutrients impact gene expression and how genes impact nutrient metabolism.
2. Methylation and health - symptoms of methylation disfunction. Disfunctions of the folate, homocysteine/ methionine, neurotransmitter, transsulphuration and urea cycles and their effect on immunity and allergy, mood, stress resiliance and insomnia, metabolism and energy, detoxification, cardiovascular health and gene expression.
3. The nutrigenomics of methylation - genes, variants and nutrient interactions. The function of the MTHFR, DHFR, MTR, MTRR, BHMT, BH4, BH2, CBS, COMT, VDR, SUOX, SOD, NOS genes and the potential impact of variants. The role of nutrients and cofactors such as folate, protein, choline, betaine, zinc, iron, magnesium, B Vitamins, Vitamin D and their different forms - including methylated/ activated supplements and the key differences between dietary folate versus folic acid.
4. Genotype testing and analysis in practice - *case studies.Hands on session to equip practitioners to use nutrigenomics in practice. Linking genetic variants to relevant functional tests and personalised naturopathic nutrition plans.
5. Methylation and nutrigenomics resources and support. What next. Websites, specialist groups and meetups, tools and analysis, how to keep up with the latest research.
