Event description

Description

The NW ADASS Programme Office has been requested by the NW Safeguarding Leads and networks to organise an event focussing on Making Safeguarding Personal.

Making Safeguarding Personal (MSP) is a sector led initiative which aims to develop an outcomes focus to safeguarding work, and responses to support people to improve or resolve their circumstances. It is about engaging with people about the outcomes they want at the beginning and middle of working with them, and then ascertaining the extent to which those outcomes were realised at the end. The work is supported by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Care and other national partners.

MSP seeks to achieve:

  • A personalised approach that enables safeguarding to be done with, not to, people
  • Practice that focuses on achieving meaningful improvement to people's circumstances rather than just on ‘investigation' and ‘conclusion'
  • An approach that utilises social work skills rather than just ‘putting people through a process'
  • An approach that enables practitioners, families, teams and SABs to know what difference has been made

This conference will provide exciting opportunities for Practitioners involved in safeguarding to explore the best practice tools for a MSP approach to safeguarding, giving consideration to the management of risk, balancing wellbeing and safety. We are going to explore the use of these, thereafter we want to provide advice to our Local Authorities on the best approach to take.

The topics suggested below are yet to be confirmed :

  • Advocacy role and the impact this has in the context of proportionate response for the Adult
  • New categories of abuse defined in the Care Act including modern slavery, self-neglect and domestic abuse
  • Financial scamming
  • MSP approach in response to transitions and managing risk

Participants

  • 2 x Advanced Practitioner-level social work colleagues from each LA
  • 9 Experts by Experience with support workers – one will be approaching colleagues directly e.g. 3 Experts by Experience in total.
  • 10 additional partners

These events are highly sought after and often oversubscribed.
