Event description

Description

This will be the second meeting of the revived North West Heritage Networking Forum, which aims to support trustees and officers of Friends' groups of museums, archives and heritage organisations. The first part of the meeting will be spent on updates from the Steering Group and discussing priorities for future events; the second part will feature a presentation from Lesmond Taylor of Salford CVS on recruiting and training new trustees - much of the commentary will also apply to officers of Friends' groups

Salford CVS is the city-wide infrastructure organisation for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector; providing specialist information, advice, development support and opportunities for influence and collaboration. We are looking forward to a stimulating session that will help us to think about how we can best approach the need to bring 'new blood' on board, ensure that effective succession planning takes place, and also create and maintain a good balance of skills and identities on our boards and committees.

Lunches will be available to purchase in the Salford Museum and Art Gallery, opposite the Working Class Movement Library. You can find more information, including a menu and prices, here: https://www.salfordcommunityleisure.co.uk/culture/salford-museum/cafe

During the afternoon session teas and coffees will be served. Please support the Working Class Movement Library by making a donation in return for your drink.

Steering Group member Dennis Maginn has kindly offered to take groups of around 8 people on a tour of the Library, with a choice of times before and after the event. Please note that the tour involves climbing stairs. If you wish to join one of the tours please indicate your timing preference here. Places on each of the tours are limited - first come first served.

The network is supported by Museum Development North West https://museumdevelopmentnorthwest.wordpress.com/

and the Regional Heritage Centre, Lancaster University https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/users/rhc/

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are plenty of trains which stop at Salford Crescent station coming from Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Deansgate, as well as from Manchester Victoria and Salford Central. On arrival at Salford Crescent turn left onto the main road at the top of the steps at the station, walk to the pedestrian crossing and the Library is the building straight opposite as you cross the main road at that point.

To travel by bus - coming from from the direction of Manchester centre, the WCML is fifty yards beyond the Salford University bus stop - buses arrive regularly from:

Piccadilly Gardens (34, 36, 37, 38, X34)
Shudehill (8, 67, 100)
Oxford Road/Princess Street (V1, V2).

Bus 50 comes from The Lowry/MediaCity (and from Albert Square in Manchester).

By car (or bike) - from the direction of Manchester centre, the Library is situated on the A6, after Salford Cathedral and opposite Salford University, Museum and Art Gallery. After Irwell Place and Albion Place on your left (opposite the University) take the left that is signposted for Salford Crescent railway station. You will need to get into the bus lane for this.

Take your first left off this road (Christchurch Avenue) and then first left again signed as Aldred Street. This will bring you to the back of the building where there is car parking. You need a permit to park there - call in and get one from the Library when you arrive (and please note that parking is limited so you may need to find alternative parking nearby). Parking permits for the Library car park are free but you will need to provide a £5 returnable deposit.

If you have mobility difficulties and would like to be able to park near the building, please contact us in advance nw-heritage-network@lancaster.ac.uk

By car from outside of Salford and Manchester, the M602 runs from the M6 right into Salford. Turn left at the end of the motorway and follow the road up to a T-junction with the A6. Turn right here then immediately left (signposted University and Salford Crescent railway station). Turn sharp left at the bottom of the road, passing back under the A6. Take the first turning right and then first left. This puts you by the car park at the back of the Library (see above).
