In the Coroner's Court

We are proud to present our third showcase event.

The event follows on from our two previous events and this time we move to the Coroner's court to on a journey through the inquest process.

In collaboration with Lincoln House Chambers and Osborn Abas Hunt Solicitors, we are delighted to be staging this mock Inquest.

Proceeds from the day’s event will go towards supporting the North West Air Ambulance charity whose detaills can be found HERE.

An inquest bares some similarity to a prosecution trial, taking place in a courtroom and often in front of a jury.

There are differences, though. Inquests have a Coroner instead of a Judge, they occur only after a death and whilst a trial deals with guilt and innocence and punishment, an inquest is fact finding and seeks to determine who has died, where and when they died, the medical cause of death and how they died. The “how” question often causes a review of the safe working practices, planning and supervision of those killed at work.

Witnesses are compelled to give evidence in an inquest but they are not accused of any offence nor are they required to offer any defence.

A Coroner is also concerned to identify any risk of future deaths arising and to invite action from those able to improve safety.

The event will offer many useful and interesting insights, illustrating the process that follows a fatal accident on a construction site. Evidence will be heard live from a range of witnesses that illustrate how work was planned and how it was being done. Overseen by a former Coroner with practicing barristers advocating on behalf of those involved, the day will be authentic, as well as informative and entertaining.

Presiding over proceeding for the court are:

Austin Welsh

Austin specialises in representing clients in relation to health and safety, environmental and product safety offences. He is regularly instructed to represent individual directors, companies and prosecuting authorities in such matters. Austin regularly provides lectures and seminars on regulatory law and is known for his expert knowledge in this field.

Leila Chahhary

Leila is regularly instructed to represent and advise individuals and a variety of public and private organisa- tions before a range of UK courts, tribunals and constitutional panels across a multitude of legal areas and issues arising under civil law, criminal law, regulatory law, professional disciplinary law and public law.

Lisa Roberts

Lisa is one of only a handful of ‘A’ list Specialist Regulatory Advocates in Health and Safety and Environmental Law. She is regularly instructed by the Police Federation to act on behalf of serving police officers in criminal matters and Misconduct (disciplinary) hearings and has acted on behalf of police officers, companies and the Health and Safety Executive in several inquests. She also accepts privately-funded instructions on behalf of individuals facing sexual offences.
