Event description
This webinar explores the nutritional complexities of supporting older people with obesity and diabetes.

About this Event

The BDA’s Older People Specialist Group is delighted to announce this webinar led by Dr Natalie Cox and Ruth Hammond, RD. The theme for the webinar is obesity and diabetes with a specific focus on the nutritional complexities encountered when supporting older people. We are excited to host two speakers with extensive expertise in these fields and would encourage attendees to take the opportunity to ask them questions. Both speakers will be running their presentation at the same time and the attendees can choose which presentation to listen to 'live'. They will then have an opportunity to access a recording of the second webinar at a later stage. This will be followed by the groups AGM.

General admission for this event is £5 per ticket. This event is free for members of the Older People Specialist Group - look out for the link in your emails.

Speakers bio:

Dr Natalie Cox is a NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre clinical doctoral research fellow and specialist registrar in Geriatric Medicine. Her research interests focus on taking a mixed methods approach to understanding influences on appetite in older people. The research has an emphasis on identifying potentially modifiable lifestyle factors, which may be key to combatting loss of appetite in later life.

Natalie completed a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Sussex and then qualified in Medicine from Brighton and Sussex Medical School in 2011. Following training in clinical medicine and obtaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK), in 2015 she became an academic clinical fellow in Geriatric Medicine where she further developed her interest in nutrition in later life.

Ruth Hammond is a Prescribing Support Dietitian and is currently working for Herts Valleys CCG. She has previously worked in both acute and community settings in weight management and bariatrics, learning disabilities, dysphagia and diabetes. Such varied settings and specialities have enabled her to understand the challenges faced by health care professionals, patients and carers in managing patients' nutritional needs and see the grey areas that don’t fit neatly into boxes.

She has had 3.5 years experience working with patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This has helped her to develop and modify her approach with some patients with diabetes and malnutrition where the standard Food First approach may not always achieve the outcomes expected.
