Obie: Building an audience.
Overview
"Obie's been on the stand-up comedy circuit for 27 years. That’s nearly as long as Nelson Mandela was in jail before becoming President of South Africa. Obie’s career is strikingly similar: he, too, has spent much of the past 27 years talking to hardly anybody in small, dark rooms.
Despite the dark rooms, Obie has regularly headlined comedy shows across the country for years and sold out many shows at the Edinburgh festival.
While he’s built up a loyal, regular audience and done well at the Edinburgh Festival, he’s decided it’s time to replicate that success year-round by launching a weekly show in Glasgow.
His current master plan is simple: Record every show, put the clips on social media, go viral, and spend the rest of his life touring the world. Either that, or become President of South Africa.
Come see why Obie has a truly unique view of the world. He's guaranteed to launch into a mad tangent that nobody—including him—saw coming.
Here is a review Obie got from thje Scotsman a few years ago.
"More homegrown laughs are to be enjoyed with Obie (****) who has the natural comedy gifts of the Glaswegian and the skill and experience to use them to peak funniness. This is an hour of laughter with no real theme, no dead dad, no clever subtext and no revelations at the end. It is that too often dismissed type of Edinburgh show, the 'just funny' hour. The entire room rocks with laughter, pretty much constantly. “It's all made up, these are just jokes,” he reminds us every so often. And jokes there are, about painting stripes on a budgie, comedy as therapy, funny friends and so much else that is honestly only funny when he says it. So go and see him and you will understand. This is a body-and-soul funny man"
