About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

In this two-hour workshop, you’ll learn to treat everyday objects as narrative anchors that bridge physical material to virtual, inspired by methods from Melissa's project Home is a Dwelling Path. Part 1 · Field Forage We begin by exploring around Copeland Gallery, its back garden, and the Copeland Park and Bussey Building. Using the 3D scanning software PolyCam, participants are invited to select a random object and record a story behind it. Part 2 · Rapid 3D Capture Back indoors, we then clean and export your scans, covering best-practice tips for mesh decimation and texture optimisation so they import smoothly into browser-based worlds. Part 3 · Collaborative Worldbuilding Using New Art City, an online 3D web editor, participants will stitch their objects into a shared virtual landscape. All levels welcome! Bring a smartphone that has PolyCam pre-downloaded and your laptop.

Organised by Phreaking Collective as part of an series of talks and workshops accompanying BitRot, an exhibition exploring the fragility, decay, and obsolescence of our digital age. Taking its name from the slow degradation of digital files over time, Bit Rot stages a post-human reflection on the technologies that once promised progress and the lives they now leave behind.

All events hosted by Phreaking will be completely free of charge. We've set up a gofundme to assist with the production costs: https://www.gofundme.com/f/bitrot-exhbition/donate
