Event description

Description

Obvara firing, also known as Sourdough firing is an ancient tradition from the Baltic. Sometimes also referred to as Baltic Raku. We will see the pots transformed by being bathed in the Obvara mixture while they are red hot, and watch as a palette of natural colours race across their surface before being quenched in water to fix them in place.

And of course plenty of tea and cake and a delicious organic lunch both days – All materials provided

What You'll Learn...

  • You will learn about the development of the firing process and how to achieve it in your own kiln. We will heat the pre made pots in a Raku kiln before carefully immersing them in the Obvara mixture. We will then quench them in the water bath to fix the surface effect.

  • We will discuss how to create your own sourdough mixture and the technical considerations for this type of firing.

  • We will fire 3 different kilns during the day and there will be many opportunities for applying the learning from one firing to the next.

This workshop is part of a three day event - if you wish to include The Magic of Handbuilding please click here for more details and booking.
