Event Details

STEM Bytes festivals have become the go-to Milton Keynes event for children wanting creative fun during the school holidays and every weekend throughout the year. From Minecraft to Lego and Raspberry Pi to BBC Micro:bits, there is plenty to do to unlock imaginations, inspire and entertain. Educational fun for all the family, providing Bytes sized tasters of coding, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality and much much more!

The National Museum of Computing is proud to present its new and improved STEM Bytes programme, running at the museum every Saturday and Sunday and throughout all school holidays.

 Lego Mindstorms Robots activities

Participants will work with Lego Mindstorms to build and program a robot to solve a variety of problems, including mazes, moving objects and even racing. Mindstorms uses a block-based language similar to Scratch, which most of the children will be familiar with.

The details…

  • The activities are aimed at children aged 9-14, but big kids can come and play too.
  • ALL OUR stem activities are FREE with entrance to the Museum

This event is part of the "STEMBytes" programme at The National Museum of Computing and requires the purchase of an entrance ticket to the museum. All tickets purchased will grant you access to the museum and all the other STEM activities after your workshop.

Please note that these hands on activities are not a drop off events. Parental supervision is required for the entire duration.

BBC Micro: Bit Activity
The BBC micro: bit is a pocket-sized computer that you can code, customise and control to bring your digital ideas, games and apps to life. This little device has an awful lot of features, like 25 red LED lights that can flash messages. There are two programmable buttons that can be used to control games or pause and skip songs on a playlist. The BBC micro: bit can detect motion and tell you which direction you’re heading in, and it can use a low energy Bluetooth connection to interact with other devices and the Internet.

In this workshop, children will learn how to code with the BBC micro: bit. Children will begin by learning to code for the device and by the end of the day, may be able to come up with their own ideas for future creations.

Lego Mindstorms

Participants will work with Lego Mindstorms to build and program a robot in just 2 hours. Mindstorms uses a block-based language similar to Scratch, which most of the children may have used in school. The workshop uses step by step instructions, like all Lego kits, and is great for both big kids and little kids!

Minecraft Challenge

Minecraft is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination. This challenge gives our master builders just 2 hours to complete a model of an item from our museum in as much detail as possible to try and win a bag of prizes.

Cubetto & Robots

Cubetto is a friendly wooden robot that will teach your child the basics of computer programming through adventure and hands-on play. Montessori approved, LOGO Turtle inspired. We had our first event at the museum introducing the world to Cubetto in December 2017 and now we ask ourselves; “What’s Next?” The event will explain and explore new modules, blocks, and activities that kids can undertake to increase their early year's knowledge of basic coding.

This event is primarily aimed at children aged between 4 – 7.
