Neurodiversity is an umbrella term to describe the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioural traits. Autism is one such Neurodiversity and affects approximately 1 in 100 people across the entire human demographic. Autism doesn’t discriminate and your race, religion, gender, sexuality, age or social class doesn't matter. Autism is a human variation.

OD&L welcome you to hear from Detective Inspector Warren Hines about his diagnosis of Autism, how it has enriched his life and helped him to solve over 90 homicides. Warren states:

"I am Autistic and for me the world is generally a confusing mass of people, events and places that I do not fit into. Like other Autistic people I have spent my life imitating neurotypical people to ensure that I am accepted, masking the traits that would identify me as being Autistic. This can have a catastrophic affect upon mental well-being, especially when the mask slips. Depression and anxiety have been my constant companions throughout life, however I wouldn’t trade being Autistic for anything".

Warren's input will explore some common misconceptions and identify some of the skills that can often be a specific aspect of Autism and are now being actively sought by governments and blue chip companies. There is no doubt that these skills have greatly assisted Warren as a Senior Investigating Officer and enabled him to make a success of his career in policing and contribute in raising awareness of the small and often very cheap workplace adjustments that can make a huge difference to people with Autism. During his talk, Warren will show two videos that are the closest representation he's seen of his own experiences of the world and there will be the opportunity to ask questions which will help you to be more inclusive of colleagues and to better protect and serve our communities.

Warren's presentation gives us a rare opportunity and insight into the lived experiences of Autism which will enable us to recognise the struggle of others and to remember the importance of building a fair and just society through the inclusion of everyone. It honours our Autistic communities and showcases the gifts that Autism can bring. The talk will be impactive, helping to equip you with a greater understanding of inclusivity that can better shape our future.
