Draw along and learn about the first surrealist - the little known genius Odilon Redon! Part of our Impressionist Summer Season!

About this event

This class is part of our IMPRESSIONIST SUMMER SEASON! To see our other sessions dedicated to Monet, Degas, and an amazing cohort of FEMALE impressionists, click here:

Join London Drawing Group’s Luisa Maria MacCormack for a class dedicated to the incredible visionary artist you’ve probably never heard of; Odilon Redon!

Although technically part of the Symbolist movement, Odilon Redon has long been touted as perhaps the very first Surrealist! Working almost fifty years before the Surrealists came to represent Europe’s Avant Garde, Redon’s poetic, dark, colour driven approach to artmaking would influence the birth of this most famous of movements, and many generations of artists to come.

To kick off, tutor Luisa Maria MacCormack will offer a short introduction to Redon’s life and work, exploring his many and intriguing influences from scientific breakthroughs in astronomy to Baudelaire’s Fleurs du Mal, and we’ll then move on to the drawing element of the class!

This session will offer an imaginative approach to constructing your drawings, working from myths, symbols and your own intuition! Together We’ll make studies of Redon’s own pastel drawings, with step by step guidance offered by tutor Luisa in how to manage pastel drawing from a more imaginative perspective!

YOU WILL NEED:

PASTELS - There are so many different kinds of pastels out there, we’ve included some links below to different brands we love at different price points that you might want to buy and try out at home!

FIXATIVE - We like to use an organic fixative similar to the recipe that Degas used! It is fairly expensive but if you’d like to try it out, its called SPECTRAFIX, and is non toxic, and the most buildable (and least smelly) fixative we’ve ever used!

If you can’t find/afford this, don’t worry, you can use a normal fixative or even a good old fashioned hairspray to hold your pastels down

PASTEL PAPER - coloured or white is just fine for this session

PASTEL BRANDS

Our personal faves (unfortunately also the most expensive)! Unison Pastels https://www.unisoncolour.com/

Great for Beginners: Faber Castell Creative Studio Soft Pastel Crayons

Best Value: Talens Rembrandt Soft Pastels
