The ODST Writing Course is a package of professional development to enhance each schools’ existing writing offer. This has been designed and delivered by English Consultant Julie Sargent alongside ODST leaders. There will be six CPD sessions face to face at Wantage, which will focus on termly big ideas that we think will be applicable to all ODST schools. Sessions will include themes such as the explicit teaching of sentence structure and effective modelling and scaffolding in writing.
We have thought carefully about the principles we believe will develop the effective practice around the teaching of writing. These focus on ensuring teachers:
• Draw upon ambitious and high-quality texts as both models and inspiration for writing
• Promote and develop pupil’s language and vocabulary
• Support pupils in understanding how grammar can be used effectively within writing
• Provide timely and effective modelling and scaffolding to support the journey towards independence
• Give pupils a secure understanding of the process of writing
• Ensure pupils understand the purpose and process of editing and proofreading
• Support pupils in securing firm foundations in transcriptional skills
• Write with confidence for different purposes
• Show an awareness of audience, in particular, the effect on the reader
• Apply writing skills across the wider curriculum
This is the second year of running the programme to reinforce and embed the principles. We suggest sending a different member of staff to last year in order to cascade the learning further through the school.
