Off-Camera Flash Photography Workshop

Build your confidence using off-camera flash in this hands-on, 4-hour outdoor Off-Camera Flash Photography Workshop. You'll learn to light people in real-world locations using a mix of 1, 2 and 3-flash setups, modifiers and creative techniques to bring depth and drama to your portraits. Ideal for anyone with a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a hotshoe, this session is perfect for those wanting to master flash on location - whether to enhance natural light or take control when conditions fall short.

Starting from my South Wales-based studio in Penarth, we’ll head out for a 4 hour workshop in a range of nearby outdoor locations with a mix of practical, no-nonsense theory (seriously, we’ll keep the jargon to a minimum) and lots of shooting / practical time. There’ll also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and chat throughout the session.

What you can expect to get out of the session

  • Hands on experience with using off-camera / portable flash techniques
  • No nonsense theory and practical advice
  • 1, 2, 3 light setups
  • Studio flash modifiers & attachments
  • Tips on finding great outdoor locations
  • Tips to help you maximise what you can do with little or no equipment
  • Plenty of shooting time with models and trying techniques
  • Experience with working with models and posing
  • Groups limited to 3-4 people

What to bring

  1. Camera (mirrorless or DSLR)
  2. Hotshoe attachment
  3. Empty memory card (or two)
  4. Fully charged battery and spare
  5. Your lenses
  6. Camera bag
  7. Comfy shoes
  8. Sun protection (hat / sun tan lotion)

Please note - I have a spare mirrorless camera if for whatever reason your camera isn’t working on the day of the session.

Who’s it suitable for?

You don’t need to be a photography expert - ideally you’ll know your way around your camera but this workshop is aimed at beginner to intermediate levels.

This workshop is great for people who want to get better or learn to take location portraits and use flash to add extra depth and help out when the sun isn’t as good as it can be.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking nearby?

Yes - my studio is located down an alleyway so there'll be a space there. Guests can also park for free on Rudry Street, subject to spaces being available.

Do I need to be an expert at photography?

No, beginner to intermediate skill levels are welcome! It's helpful if you know a few basic camera settings like changing ISO, changing aperture and changing your shutter speed, but you don't need to be a professional. This workshop is aimed at people who want to elevate their skills using flash.

What happens if the weather is really bad?

As this is an outdoor workshop at multiple locations, it's weather dependent. If we can't go ahead due to terrible weather, I'll circulate an alternative date option to attendees up to 2 days before the original workshop date.

Are there any mobility restrictions?

Please note my studio is up one flight of steps, where we'll be starting the workshop. We'll be walking between several locations within Penarth, including inclines and uneven terrain, so you'll need to be able to navigate these easily.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing and sensible footwear for walking reasonable distances. In case of cold weather, bring layers if required - you can always leave coats at my studio and pick them up at the end.
